
The only island-state in the Arab world, Bahrain is unique in several ways. An archipelago of 33 islands of which Bahrain Island is the largest at 50km long an 16km wide.
In Arabic bahrain means "two seas" being an appropriate designation. It is strategically positioned halfway down the Arabian Gulf, from the east coast of Saudi Arabia, off the Qatar peninsula with good harbours and abundant fresh water.
Bahrain's reputation as a relatively liberal and modern Persian Gulf state has made it a favourite with travelers and an excellent introduction to the Gulf. Bahrain is connected to the east coast of Saudi Arabia by a causeway.
